Belle & Adam: Titanic
Engaged to be married to a woman he does not love - a match enforced by his money grubbing father - the poised young aristocrat, Adam, is utterly miserable. On his first night aboard the RMS Titanic, he debates pitching himself over the edge of the ship and into the icy waters below, never to be seen or paraded around ever again.
He would have jumped, too, had he not been talked down by a shockingly beautiful girl who had somehow managed to smuggle herself onto the ship, hoping to see the world. Her name was Belle, and Adam quickly came to learn that she had been in France prior to boarding the Titanic, selling her sketches to make ends meet. A bizarre concept to the wealthy gentleman, which only made her, and her way of life, all the more alluring.
Over the next few days, the two would engage in a love affair worthy of the world’s best poets and playwrights, filled with desire, intrigue, promises of the heart, the theft of a priceless diamond ring known as “the Prince’s Rose” - and, of course, unbearable tragedy.
In the short time that he would know her, Belle would set Adam free from the confines of aristocratic life - but what is he supposed to do when she succumbs to the icy waters that she saved him from plunging himself into? How is his heart supposed to go on?
The “lesson” of Beauty and the Beast
This is the synopsis for the new live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast:
Belle (Emma Watson), a bright, beautiful and independent young woman, is taken prisoner by a beast (Dan Stevens) in its castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the beast’s hideous exterior, allowing her to recognize the kind heart and soul of the true prince that hides on the inside.
How about:
The prince learns that if he shows respect and kindness to others, instead of greeting them with threats and abuse, good people will love him regardless of his appearance.
Because you know what? Belle had nothing to learn here. She never had an issue with the beast’s appearance. From the beginning, she spoke to him like a man and expected him to behave like one. Her appropriate anger towards him at the beginning of their relationship was because she was angry at his abusive treatment of herself and her father. He was the one who had to learn that abuse is neither acceptable nor justified, regardless of his appearance/childhood trauma/[insert excuse here].
So, how about we stop telling women that it is their responsibility to look beyond the abusive beast and try find the prince within. Because most of the time, there’s no prince, and the woman wastes years of her life living with and trying to appease an abuser. And in the rare cases where there actually is a prince within, it’s not the woman’s job to find him. It’s on the prince to sort his own crap out rather than making others suffer.
